Chris tracks down Lady Gaga’s meat-dress maker
With Radio 1’s Lady Gaga documentary due to air before Big Weekend, Chris had been handed what sounded like a very specific assignment: find out who made Gaga’s infamous meat dress. His first lead said that the dress had come from a butcher somewhere around Chorley, so he approached the investigation with the confidence of a man who had been given a postcode and very little else.
That confidence quickly met the reality of ringing butchers and asking whether they had ever made a dress out of meat. Chris was passed from shop to shop, asking increasingly bewildered people about cuts of beef, whether they received many meat-dress requests, and whether a mysterious garment might be under preparation in the back room. Scott and Beccy enjoyed the fact that every call made the premise sound less plausible.
Eventually the trail left Lancashire altogether. The dress had been created in Los Angeles by designer Franc Fernandez, who explained that it had been assembled in and out of a fridge over two days. He discussed selecting the cuts and making the outfit look flattering, giving the team exactly the kind of practical detail they had not expected from a story about a pop star wearing raw meat.
Dear Scott returned after the break, bringing messages from listeners in Texas and a familiar fear from Beccy: shower curtains. One listener had adopted Beccy’s habit of checking behind a curtain, only to find an unfamiliar cat in the bathroom on one occasion and cause a spectacular shampoo-and-rubber-duck disaster on another. The team also debated whether ketchup counted as a smoothie if tomatoes were technically fruit, which they decisively concluded it did not.
Stupid Street then asked which celebrities people dreamed about. The answers ranged from Will Smith playing basketball at a school, to Kate Moss on a beach and Jodie Marsh running a fruit shop. The feature gave Scott, Beccy and Chris an excuse to compare their own strange celebrity dreams, while the programme kept building excitement for the Lady Gaga documentary and the listener-made Radio 1 film planned for Big Weekend.
