4 November 2008: Verne Troyer visited as Britain tried to vote for Barack Obama

Verne Troyer surprised Scott

Scott had expected the Mini-Me actor to arrive with the sort of demands associated with a major celebrity visit. Instead Verne Troyer was warm and easy-going, happily taking photographs and looking around Radio 1.

Election day reached the street

With the American presidential election dominating the news, the show asked people in Britain who they intended to vote for. Plenty answered Barack Obama even though they were not American voters, which gave the team exactly the confusion they had hoped to uncover.

Celebrity politics met station imaging

The programme discussed the celebrity Don’t Vote campaign, which used reverse psychology to encourage participation, while Britney Spears appeared in newly recorded Radio 1 material. The episode captured how an enormous international political day could sit beside celebrity visits and station jingles without the show ever pretending to be a conventional current-affairs programme.
