10 September 2008: Katy Perry inspired “I Kissed a Neil and I Liked It”

Katy Perry’s hit became a street experiment

With I Kissed a Girl everywhere, the show decided to create its own version. Neil from the office was sent outside for I Kissed a Neil and I Liked It, asking women whether they would give him a kiss and discovering that five of them were prepared to do so.

The song was producing arguments as well as jokes

Scott discussed the attention around the record, including attempts to censor or reinterpret its lyrics and a church sign which had played on the title. The programme was fascinated by the gap between the song being a huge pop hit and the moral panic it could still generate.

Katy Perry joined the programme

Katy herself came in and was folded straight into the show’s sense of humour, with special-pants jokes and the street experiment sitting alongside the normal interview. A separate attempt to identify and keep a familiar voice-over artist on the phone added another small challenge to an episode built around recognising voices, faces and pop-culture references.
