1 September 2008: Unofficial Mills dug into Scott’s radio past for Jono’s birthday

Unofficial Mills supplied the birthday archive

Scott marked listener Jono’s 20th birthday with material from Unofficial Mills, the fan site which had been collecting old moments from the programme. A deliberately posh Radio 4-style voice read the message, while Scott acknowledged that the site had become a useful source of clips from his earlier broadcasting life.

Scott Platinum made his younger self sound very different

The old recordings immediately gave the team something to mock. Scott’s younger radio voice sounded much posher than the version listeners knew in 2008, and the show enjoyed details including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs as evidence that the transformation had been extensive. The archive also revived a story about childhood fish called Hungry, Peter and Scott, with the unfortunate update that Peter and Scott had died.

Old clips produced new material

The programme kept using the archive as a jumping-off point rather than simply replaying it. A Just Torn-style dilemma appeared, Shaggy material involving Sara Cox was revisited and the team found the sort of accidental innuendo which would later become a regular source of entertainment. The result was both a birthday mention for the fan site and an affectionate demolition of Scott’s own radio past.
