3 July 2008: David Hasselhoff and “Snakes When You Strain”

David Hasselhoff drops by the studio to discuss a bonkers new film concept, appears on The Sunday Night Project later that day, and makes a semi-serious offer for Scott and Beccy to move in with him in Los Angeles.

The Hoff arrives full of energy, fresh from a trip to London Zoo where he and Justin and Alan fed sharks. He’s in the country to appear as a guest panellist on The Sunday Night Project (Channel 4), and Scott tests his knowledge of his own career—particularly his role in Knight Rider, where he correctly identifies the actress who replaced Patricia McPherson in the second year. The conversation quickly moves to the show’s absurd new film pitch: “Snakes When You Strain,” a disaster-comedy where Hasselhoff plays Drake Naparb, a hotel hero whose job is to sleep with snake-bite victims to save their lives (snakes attack from the toilet, naturally). Scott and Jenny record a sample scene with him performing the character down the phone. Hasselhoff is genuinely game and delivers the lines with full commitment.

The chat meanders through his work on America’s Got Talent, his feud with Simon Cowell over a failed 1993 single that hit number 45, the revival of Knight Rider (which he admits he wasn’t thrilled with), and plans for a Baywatch musical concept. He mentions his own fan site, DavidHasselhoff.com, which now has 10,000 members and features a devoted Florida fan named Tammy who calls in daily to play harmonica—currently performing Christmas songs in July. When Scott casually mentions that Beccy wants a new house but has no money, Hasselhoff casually offers up his sprawling LA mansion, claiming he’s recently single with plenty of room. Scott and Beccy take him at face value and announce they’re moving to Bella (his home). They finish with a quick “Oh! What’s Occurring?” segment where Hasselhoff attempts to guess song lyrics.
