He insists he didn’t ask for lip gloss despite Mariah having lip gloss applied throughout her visit, though he notes she smelled lovely. The interview itself was awkward: Scott admits he didn’t research properly and made a string of misjudgements, including calling her “MC” after she’d clearly stated she doesn’t like that nickname, insisting on that approach anyway because he wanted to be her friend. He also jumped straight into asking about her song “Touch My Body” without understanding the context or having seen the accompanying music video, which Mariah had to explain was a humorous spoof. Scott’s lack of preparation frustrated her visibly.
The conversation then moved to a phone mix-up with Reggie Yates from the BBC Chart Show. Mariah had been discussing her record sales (around 160 million) when Reggie mentioned 80 million instead. She thought he’d hung up on her, but it turned out the BBC’s line had dropped. Scott’s team member Jim tried to help clarify by putting the phone to his ear, which created further confusion. Despite the awkwardness, Scott expresses genuine affection for Mariah, admiring how ridiculous and entertaining she is, with her entourage of around ten people constantly fussing over her appearance and needs.
