25 April 2007: Paintball Apple Shoot in the Radio 1 Beer Garden

Scott and the team head to a pub garden near Radio 1 for a bizarre game involving a paintball gun, an apple, and Laura’s head on the line — all decided by a William Tell trivia question.

Broadcasting live from a beer garden at a pub near Radio 1, Scott introduces a new game with help from Yorkie, an official paintball instructor. The premise is simple but absurd: answer a trivia question correctly to win the paintball gun, while the loser has to balance an apple on their head and take shots from their teammate.

The trivia question concerns William Tell — specifically, whose head did he supposedly shoot an apple off? After a lengthy back-and-forth of wrong guesses (Robin Hood, various royal figures), Scott finally reveals the answer: William Tell’s own son, as a form of punishment. Danny gets the question right and receives the gun. Laura, somewhat reluctantly, agrees to have the apple placed on her head.

What follows is a chaotic attempt at the stunt. Danny’s first shot misses wildly, hitting Laura in the leg instead. Laura threatens violence if he shoots her leg again. On the second attempt, he successfully hits the apple. The segment captures Laura’s panicked noises throughout, which listeners apparently found entertaining enough to text in about.

The episode also features Scott relating an encounter his mum had with an aggressive driver in Southampton. Rather than confront the man directly, Scott took down his phone number (displayed on a “for sale” sign in the car window) and called him on air during newsbeat, inviting him to apologize to his mother — complete with bleeps for his profanity.
