Highlights from the show
Presenter: Chappers and Dave
It's Saturday July 2nd and today is Live8. So Radio 1 have put the finest DJs on the air – Moyles and Mills. But first it's Chappers and Dave. Fair play to them though, it's a great show (otherwise I wouldn't review it!)
Chappers likes this weekend – Live8, Cricket and Wimbledon. Both of them are quite pleased with themselves, its Live8 today and they don't need to think of any features.
The Chappers and Dave Live8 Coverage
Dave: "Turn your radio on and pull the knob off… or whatever they used to say"
Live8 is almost here, and it'll all be happening in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Eden, Barrie, Tokyo, Johannesburg and Moscow. When the Live8 artists come off stage, the first thing they go to is the radio section, and the first station in the radio section is Radio 1. So you'll hear it here first. Radio 1 – "the world's local radio station".
Feeling ambitious, they asked for callers who were living internationally, and going to a different Live8 gig, to phone-in. "A global hub" according to Dave. Dave claimed he's good with traffic information. So floods of texts came in asking where the best place to park is. Radio 1 Disclaimer: Please don't take Dave's word when he gives advice.
Lynn the newsreader is off to Live8 at 5.30 to see the second half of the gig. She's "wagged" a ticket. Dave only wants one pair if there's any going to be "wagged".
Lots of texts coming in from texters who are in the queue at Hyde Park. A guy called Bolton was on the phone getting ready for the gig in Moscow. He's from Luton. It's "off the hook" and apparently "bloody cold".
One caller was about to take Elton John's bags to an airport. She couldn't say where, and she wouldn't look through the cases. Dave assures her that he wouldn't tell anyone… Another caller was in Hyde Park, with much cheering around her, and she'd lost her husband. The caller said she could be found "by some grass and trees". Good luck to him. Matt was in Paris on the auto-route. It was "patchy" apparently, and Dave reassured us that he meant the phone coverage, and not the show or the Live8 event.
Radio 1's Live8 Guests
Macca joined Colin and Edith yesterday, and while Chappers compiles the sports news for Scott in the Live Lounge (off teletext of course), all the Friday guests have to pass him – including Sir Paul. According to Chappers he was a very nice guy. During one song they asked him if he was going to doing any songs and he got his piano out, made room for it, and started singing Lady Madonna. Elsewhere Joss Stone joined Dave and Moyles, and Keane joined Jo Whiley.
Vernon Kay
Let's not forget whose show it is. The reason Vernon's off to Live8 and not Chappers and Dave is apparently because Vernon's better dressed. Vernon says he feels like "Jeremy Clarkson". "Dietotenhosen", one of the artists playing at Live8, translates to dead trousers. Kinda puts a dampener on the event doesn't it?
Also on the show
He'll be the person people see before going on-stage and the first when people come off stage.
Alrite Treacle
Mills was on the phone to Chappers and Dave too, sounding very nervous – even more excited and nervous than hosting Reverse-A-Word. "And even less orange" according to Mills. He described hundreds of people running towards the front of the stage whilst Chris and him are backstage trying to get to grips with the whole ordeal. He's apparently been planning his time off the air so he can meet his favourite bands and artists. Sneeky!
Camp Norton
BBC Radio 1 called into Camp Norton in America, and he was talking about Live 8 in Philadelphia. Apparently most of the show has been shut down. He claimed there'll be a lot of "back to you Jonathan". He hasn't met 'Big Willie' yet (so to speak).
Graham: "I look like a pig that's been punched"
Chris Moyles was also on the show and he was talking about how unprepared the team are. He said that he was just wearing scruffs, nothing like Vernon.
Russia
Valery Sutkin's playing. Dave thinks that was one of the first women in space for Russia. Although according to my research that was Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova in 1963.
Chappers: "Yes and Buzz Adrian and Neil Armstrong are playing the American gig".
Anyway, in some way or form Dave managed to bore the listeners with his facts proving he was right.
Spoony's Anthem
Spoony's picked Bobby Valentino as his weekend anthem, which led to Chappers and Dave having an off-air meeting on the air. He'd chosen a song which is already out. Like they said – "the world's local radio station".
