  1. I'd hazard a guess Vick & Katie (or Katie on her own) will remain chart cover. I'm assuming with them doing cover for Jordan (and Vick i assume will be off part of August anyway) is the reason Yasser has been drafted in. It's been a good while since he appeared on Radio 1. I recall he used to stand in for Dev on weekend breakfast on occasion (he used to do weekend brekkie during Big Weekend) so it's good to hear some existing BBC voices being drafted in as well as giving new voices a chance. Harpz Kaur off of Asian Network is covering Matt & Mollie in a few weeks
  2. If we're talking the later end of the timescale for shows to move to other parts of the country.. it could be possible that there will be some movement with either Ken or Steve's slot on Radio 2. OJ Borg i can see moving to daytimes from Salford (where he broadcasts his overnight shows from).
  3. I'm glad we're getting an outside broadcast. I very much enjoy 'event' radio which i think no other station tops Radio 1 on. The family feel with all the DJ's that comes across on air is especially a highlight which i enjoy. I assume they'll be popping up at various points during the day on Clara, Scott & Grimmy's shows. These summer road trips remind me a bit of the noughties on R1, they did a fair bit of this, especially with Moyles and his team... so it's very reminicent of that (for me at least).
  4. I agree on this too. I'm not a fan of the shortening and mixing of songs. When Greatest Hits first started 10-1, the songs were played in full. Radio 1 aren't fully against playing older tracks from the mid 90's and earlier, especially where dance music is concerned. The likes of Spice Girls and Oasis seem to get a regular look in on features like 10 minute takeover etc. Goes without saying that younger people like older tracks, but as CHR station, it'd be quite jarring if they went back further more often. Still, better than Capital who go back 5-6 years at most if they chuck in a non playlist track.

  6. An on air joint farewell party (i know Grimmy doesn't leave until a few weeks after Annie) with the pair of them would make good listening. I hope we get something along those lines.
  7. Who knows. He's well connected in the showbiz world, and of all the R1 DJ's that have left.. he's the one likely to branch out elsewhere. Like Annie, it does sound like it was his decision not to renew his contract. I can see why.. he's took his show as far as he could go and he's going out on a (fairly) high... he's done the top gig with brekkie. I will actually miss him. 14 years is good going. Many of the general listenership tend to disagree but he was the right choice at that time for breakfast. I do think he is a genuinely funny and engaging broadcaster. I wonder if Annie leaving and Sinead leaving newsbeat played a little part in considering moving on. They're both a big part of his show.
  8. The Vick/Jordan pairing probably allows there to be less need for cover, as one can do the show when the other isn't on. Or at least bring in someone else to pair occasionally, as has happened with Matt & Mollie before. As Vick is still paired with Katie on Sundays, it wouldn't surprise me if she fills in with her on occasion.
  9. I'm not surprised he's leaving. He's done the top job, and 3 years on drive. His show is starting to sound a little tired so it'll be a welcome change.. and much deserved promotions for Jordan & Vick, who i'm sure will bounce of each other well... as Jordan works about well with everyone he's on air with at R1. Jordan's moment is finally here... and it was obvious when Vick joined that she would have a bigger role further down the line. That's two major daytime shows changing so hopefully it's secures Scott's future for a while yet.
  10. Just came to say this. He's just announced it on air. Interesting they've paired Jordan with Vick. I'm surprised they haven't kept Vick & Katie together to replace Jordan Fri-Sun.
  11. Hopefully we get a epic big name live lounge on Clara's final show/week. She's been a good strong music DJ in that slot, keeping it consistent and she is the best fit for Future Sounds at this stage (that'll probably be where Jack Saunders ends up eventually though). Same goes for Annie. I'm hoping we get a big send off show for Annie. She's a big figure in the music industry as well as on the radio. For me, it'll be one of those 'end of an era' things that come round every so often. Zane Lowe was probably the last person to leave who left a big hole in a lot of listeners, and before that probably Moyles (of course that's subjective)
  12. In terms of DJ's. You'll just have the opposite impact if you suddenly turn over the daytime schedule, just like that... because of the nature of the station, the listeners listen often for the personalities themselves. Just because presenters have been there a long time, doesn't mean they should be moved on. Scott & Greg's recent awards.. plus regular listener feedback on air and online proves they're doing something right. I'm sure Aled and his team will have a good idea if they're connecting with their target audience. The problem R1 had in the past was the overall station sounded out of touch. That's certainly not the case nowadays, in all aspects (music, the chat and features etc.) Changes will always be gradual. I'd say the last year has seen more radical change than the past 10 years preceding it. For me personally, it's changing too much with my favourite presenters leaving, plus the messier show times (that's more a personal thing of not liking change)... but i accept that changes will happen and the station sounds fresh. I personally don't really understand the point about talent not coming through quick enough. There's never been more chance for talent to come through. The Christmas and bank holiday slots, Friday Early Breakfast. From that... it appears Dean McCollough could become a regular daytime cover presenter (in the same way Jordan was), Rakeem Omar has popped up again after his early breakfast stint finished last week. Now there's an example of giving cover opportunity to a local radio voice (he appears on my local BBC Station, BBC WM during the week... in fact he's been on both WM & R1 last week). Sam & Dani seem to be given the cover gig for Sundays 4-7 (Life Hacks/Chart First Look). I'm sure within 5 years some of the names above will be part of the stations future. Jess Iszatt is another one from BBC Local (although she's on one one of Bauer's Magic Fm spin off stations too) who is becoming a regular voice on the main stations specialist shows, as well as R1 Relax. Going forward i assume she'll be the regular cover for Sian, and Jack. There isn't a part of the schedule that hasn't changed in the past few years. The only person who i think has naturally come to the end of his career at R1 (or at least on weekday daytime) is Grimmy. I actually think he gets more stick than he deserves off the general public. He is actually good at what he does and he did well to take Breakfast in a different direction to Moyles, but he's done the top dream job, he's coming up to 3 years on drive... i suppose he's a big name but i think September should've been the time Jordan was moved to drive.. it would've made perfect sense. Grimmy is still a big draw for the station, so even if they moved him to Fri-Sunday 10:30-1, that's still a big slot which i think his show would suit.
  13. I'm a bit late to the party... but some very interesting points on both sides, i can certainly see valid points about change etc. However, i certainly think that Radio 1 are already in a good place... and that Aled has actually made brilliant progress in the short time he has been in the job. Radio in general has already had an issue in attracting younger listeners, i do not think the radical changes suggested would achieve that. You'd just put off your existing audience. They've always done well to place themselves where their audience are, especially on social media. They jumped straight onto Facebook and Twitter as they grew big, just like they've since done with Snapchat, Instagram and now TikTok, which is a vital way of engaging with their target audience.. and being present as a 'youth brand'. In terms of the linear radio side of things. Again, i cannot see what they cam do more 'radical' without scaring off a lot of listeners. The listener reaction often proves they're doing something right. Especially with their focus on mental health, one of the most important issues relating to the audience. Also, there has always been older listeners to Radio 1, a lot of them you'll never shake off... that's fine too. It was either Greg himself or Ben Cooper who said somewhere that if you strike a fine balance of not alienating the parents... their children will listen in too, who often stick with the station themselves as they get older. That's one of the reasons why putting Greg on breakfast was a good decision. In terms of sounding like their commercial rivals... i'd say R1 strike the balance well between serving their remit and appealing to a wider audience (which is what they've always done... listener figures will always play apart in justifying it's existance being funded by the licence payer). It's not just about the listeners and the DJ's.. i'd say they're doing a greater job than ever supporting the music industry and emerging talent... breaking them through as artists. There's more songs than ever breaking through to daytime... music you would not hear on similar CHR stations. Their specialist content is next to none... especially Jack Saunders show. As a CHR station, you'll always get the big hits you hear elsewhere.. R1 do well getting the right balance of hits and giving newer artists daytime exposure (although with it going more music heavy in recent years.. so has the repetition of tracks coming around again in a shorter space of time, although that's a minor gripe and still nowhere near as bad as most Global stations.)
  14. I think that would fall to Matt & Mollie, personally... with them potentially becoming next hosts, talking hypothetically. I do think Greg will have a few more years on breakfast, if he wants it of course.
  15. You're probably right about succession planning. Gradually introducing these 'new' voices to get the listeners used to them is exactly how both Jordan and Arielle came through before getting permanent shows. I can't see anyone pushed out the door for the next year or so, the September changes are quite major It certainly seems like Dean will become a regular daytime cover, especially with his early breakfast stint done.. and he's since been on air several times in recent weeks. Rakeem being part of big weekend can probably be explained by him being this months Friday EB host. Whoever was covering that slot this month would've been on air over this weekend.
  16. They're broadcasting from the roof of broadcasting house looking at instagram. Good to have Scott & Chris on with Jordan, a straight through double shift from their 5live show, now on R1. A little odd that Ricky is broadcasting with another duo/trio of presenters and at different times to Melvin and Charlie, i'm sure there's some logic there, no doubt. It'll be nice to hear presenters on the air together who usually wouldn't be.
  17. Is that the first time Arielle has been off this year (excluding bank holidays)? Grimmy hasn't had any weeks off air since Christmas either (apart from the one day covered by Jack Saunders). Hopefully we get a good couple of weeks back to back of Jordan covering soon.
  18. Furthermore to my comments above about RMC, to me it feels very stop gap, a way to keep them in a prominent weekday slot, as evenings have clearly been shaken up to allow cuts at the later half of the evening. Although Future Artists following Future Sounds is a good move.
  19. Congratulations to Clara, especially. I think this secures her long term future on R1. Nice that Sarah Story is joining too. Effectively going up against her old slot on Capital. She sounded good in for Annie. Danny Howard was always destined to be promoted to the start of the weekend. Well deserved. I'm not a huge fan of RMC as a trio, their content (and currently playlist) doesn't appeal to me but they are good broadcasters. They suited that slot, doing a good job replacing Charlie Sloth. It's an odd choice for the 'live lounge slot', I can only assume they've realised there's less demand for that type of show in the mid evenings, compared to more music heavy specialist content, which would deliver more value for money for the station and better appeal for listeners at that time. I actually prefer hearing R&M as a duo, and Charlie solo on Dance Anthems. Could it also be possible Vick Hope was considered but she has other commitments during the week she wants to keep? She could be in that slot within 3 years if she wanted it. RMC won't be in that slot long term, possibly. There seems to be more slight cost cutting at play here too. 'Live programming' now ends yet again another hour earlier (could even be at 10pm, Power Down playlist being an hour long, is it worth having a live presenter on for that short amount of time each night, if it wasn't cuts related, surely they'd have introduced a 2 hour Power Down show. Future Soul sounds interesting. If it means soul as a genre, it's not really something Radio 1 has touched on(at least in recent years. Two daytime shows changed presenter wise within a year (early breakfast and mid morning), so i think Greg, Scott & Grimmy are safe for a while yet.
  20. Sounds like there's cost cutting all round. Huey Morgan on Saturday and Angela Scanlon are both being replaced on Radio 2 with repeats so i'd imagine we'll see some slight cuts across the board.
  21. It's been a good run tbf. Sounds like it was her decision. I did think she would stay for a few more years. Big loss, especially to Friday nights. I did kind of think she'd stay on Friday nights after finishing Future Sounds. Now the speculation starts..
  22. Worth pointing out...the 15 minute Newsbeats cannot be dropped. It's in their broadcasting licence as dictated by Ofcom.
  23. Peak morning listening time has moved to the 10:30-10:30 block, so having Greg James on air at that time makes perfect sense. Annie's slot was moved to 6pm to bring the hottest record in the world (and her show in general) to a more primetime audience, as part of their commitment to bringing through new music and artists. Potentially some slight cost saving in the process too (finishing live programming an hour earlier, and starting live daytime programming an hour later)
  24. Indeed, there has been so many departures and changes in the past year, i think Aled has a strong schedule across the week. Not a huge fan of the changes to show starts/finishes but they obviously have their reasons for doing so. Scott's departure in particular has been predicted time and time again for what feels like an age, with no sign of him going anywhere, and rightly so.
  25. Fully agree. I don't get to listen to the full show daily (depends on the time i wake up), but yes, they made the right call putting Greg on breakfast.
