Think they should be open to play some of the more newer released tracks of the legends they play and give more broad selections of the ‘greatest hits ‘ ...

This is why I listen to very little GHR, as things stand. Good records did not cease to be on 1st Jan 2000. Their brasher 'cousin' Hits Radio has the opposite problem - They think good records only started to be made on 1st Jan 2000!

Just thinking that I feel sorry for Ken Bruce. All he's really said, is that he's had great times but it's time for a new challenge. And world war 3 has kicked off.

Did try to warn you, folks!

Whatever is put in it's place needs to have just as many 'features' (e.g. retain 'Tracks Of My Years'?) or R2 will slowly but surely lose it's domination of Mid-Mornings ... Would love to be a fly on the wall, right now.

  3. Sian Eleri for mid-morning is a bold call ...

... Specialist shows do need a 'stable' position in the schedule (9pm clashes with the R2 specialist shows, for me, though).

Maybe try Jack and Clara together for the 'Evening Sessions'?

A 'hard No' to Rock Show on a Sunday - Fri or Sat is place for that.

This is perhaps because R1 usually played a different edit of it which was at a different speed, and you were listening to the standard version?

... Right - listened - Still don't remember it. Still mystified by its success.

Might be - I'll go searching for the radio version, and report back! ....

Not sure where this 'fits' in the forums - But surely worthy of discussion.

Two things spring to my mind:

    a) I had to You-Tube the Cat Burns song - How has something so stubbornly un-memorable achieved this position??

    b) There is still no radio station which is prepared to cover the whole gamut of best-selling albums - There must be a market for this??

    ..... Your reflections ???

I do kind of get the feel that the BBC may not be the one that would double the hours for its elder presenters. Think how nudged Steve Wright to do less and know part of the reason that Jane Garvey and Fi Glover left BBC Radio and Sounds to Times Radio was how little the BBC was using them before they left they were only left with a weekly podcast. Now one that airs four days a week accompanied with live radio show. Think if you are older the reasons older presenters leaving is not going to get more hours and opportunities.

Fi and Jane would be another great example - Adding to my suspicion that the "they wouldn't want it" is effectively BBC propoganda.

Gary Davies is 65 so I doubt he’ll be up for a full time 5 day a week gig. I think he’ll be happy doing sounds of the 80’s and a few cover gigs here and there. Jo Whiley or Ken I can understand.

You could well be right. I will just point out that it was said of Graham Norton on the BBC that he wouldn't want to take on more work. He then doubled his hours, over on Virgin Radio.

  9. We can haggle over the percentage splits, for sure.

Point is - Is there an official policy on this?

If not, there will be a 'De Facto' policy on it, according to what actually gets played, over the course of a year.

Whether anybody can be arsed to collate that is another question - But it would be interesting to see.

  10. Is there even an official policy on this, in terms of the percentage split?

I'd have thought that something like this would be reasonable, in R1's case:

50% = Records made within the last 12 months

30% = Records older than above, but made within last 3 years

15% = Records older than above, but made within last 15 years

5% =  Records older than above.

Gaby is a safe pair of hands, clearly not trying to rock the boat with the cover!

Gaby Roslin and Ricky Wilson have been great together, whenever subbing at Virgin Radio. I hear that Wilson is going to be given his own slot, but it just seems a no-brainer to me to give it to them as a pair, and let them do whatever they want with it ...

Now I like Sara on a Friday for that interaction she has with listeners. But, yes, the downfall is it's all very predictable the songs they choose.

Has there been any genuine request show, on any station, since Annie Nightingale? - i.e., one where the listener's "choice" doesn't already have to be on an approved list ??
