  1. I've been wondering about some more specific aspects of the show - I'm sure we won't know any of these things until basically launch, but I wonder:

    1) What will it be called? Probably just "The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Greg James", but maybe they'll go for something different that puts Greg a bit more front and centre. I don't think it'll be "The Greg James Show" because I remember him saying how much he hates it when people name shows that way. But maybe they'll go for "The Greg James Breakfast Show". Who knows.

    2) We all want to know whether it'll be Chris Smith on news (dozens of people have tweeted him about it but he hasn't replied to any so either he doesn't know or can't say yet), but I also wonder whether they'll bring back a separate sports presenter? Probably not, because that would cost money but maybe if they want an extra voice on air they'd have a sports person as well. Plus, Greg's a lot more interested in sport than Grimmy so a separate sports reader might fit the show more.

SO excited to hear it. I reckon they'll go for all new features as well. Perhaps with the exception of the Ten Minute Takeover, but even that's been a permanent fixture since 2009 so maybe they'll take this opportunity to call it a day. They play more Greatest Hits anyway so a request feature for older songs isn't as necessary.

  2. Put it this way - Moyles absolutely smashed it for eight and a half-years, but Ben Cooper still got rid of him - and at the time it was spun as Chris's decision and I totally bought it. In fact, I don't even think there were any rumours at the time that suggested it was anything other than Chris's decision. It only came out that Ben Cooper pulled the plug because Chris himself revealed it in an interview with the Sun (ew).

So if even Chris Moyles got moved on but was allowed to spin it as his own decision, the same has definitely occurred for Grimmy.

I wonder if grimmy chose to leave or was told to leave.

I reckon he was probably told to leave - back when he was haemorrhaging listeners but the average age was falling, Ben Cooper could probably justify keeping him but not when listenership is falling whilst the average age has creeped up.

Radio 1 seems to have had a reallignment in recent months anyway, with the shift in music policy towards more Greatest Hits. So I guess Ben Cooper is going for popular again, given that he's failed to get youth.

Besides, now Radiocentre is on the verge of achieving the deregulation it's been having wet dreams about for decades, I guess the BBC is feeling emboldened to compete with commercial radio head on, because it won't have a monopoly over national FM coverage for much longer.

Glad Ben Cooper is finally reading this forum!

I have to say, I think that Greg's iteration of the breakfast show will probably be better for not having to follow Chris Moyles' show - after getting rid of him, Radio 1 had to back their reasoning up and become very focussed on making a show different to the Moyles show, and be seen to actively go after younger listeners, and retrospectively, I would have hated for Greg to have been constrained as much as Grimmy has been in the slot.

Ha! It's true, I can't remember the last time there was a Radio 1 change that this forum has unanimously been happy about in its entirety. But 10/10 for Ben Cooper on this one. Or Aled. I'd love it if Aled was somehow a part of the show, although I doubt it. Maybe Ben decided we'd suffered for too long and it was time to give us something to be happy about. And tbf it was a pretty big something. Would it be over the top to say we've got our radio station back? (Although it's a bit annoying for me - after three years of Grimmy, and two years of Moyles, I finally found a breakfast show I liked in Adam and JoJo on Capital Yorkshire, and now I've got to leave them. Oh well. Worse problems to have.)

You make a good point actually - I think Grimmy did serve a purpose to change/lower expectations from the huge success of The Chris Moyles Show, and now he's "completed"* his task, Greg can make it his own without being under so much pressure, and without being directly compared to Moyles. Which is probably for the best and means his show will be more successful.

*I did read the other day that Radio 1's average listener age is now 35 - up from 32 when Moyles finished.

  5. I'm SO HAPPY at this news. Honestly, it's fantastic. Such a well deserved promotion for Greg, such a well deserved demotion for Grimmy as well. Although it does mean there are effectively no daytime slots for people to be promoted into now - Clara's doing fine and has only been on for 3 years (this week I think), Scott hopefully still has a couple of years left in him, and now Grimmy's on drive he'll probably be there for a few years.

But I was literally thinking yesterday how I'd love to hear what a Greg James breakfast show would sound like. I've often thought it would be similar to the podcast. I SO hope Chris Smith goes with him, him and Greg would work so perfectly together. And Grace, and Chris Sawyer, and even Sophie. I hope that unlike the last breakfast show, Greg is given free reign to make it into the show he wants it to be. Roll on September!

  6. I think I've mentioned this before, but his show just doesn't deserve to have lasted this long. It doesn't deserve to be up there with the greats. It just doesn't. It doesn't hold a candle to The Chris Moyles Show. It was quite good at first as well, the first two or three years managed to be different to Moyles but still relatively entertaining. But by 2015 it had run it's course. I would've preferred it if Greg had got breakfast in 2012 anyway.

Did Grimmy mark it on his show otherwise? I remember Moyles did a week long tour when he beat Blackburn's record, although back then he was becoming longest serving, not second longest.

Yaas for gender diversity, no for lack of genre diversity from me. And I'm not criticising any of the acts, all big names and all did very well, plus that's a matter of personal taste and you can't please everyone. It's just the repetitiveness that I dislike.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the first Monday after Big Weekend when brekkie presenter didn't do their show from the location?

Based on what I can work out from the descriptions on the schedules on the Radio 1 website, no, although this is partly guesswork.

2008: Chris Moyles, not sure where
    2009: Scott, not sure where
2010: Chris Moyles, live from Bangor
2011: Chris Moyles, live from Cumbria
2012: Chris Moyles, Hackney Weekend so in the studio as normal
2013: Grimmy, live from Northern Ireland
    2014: Grimmy, not sure where
    2016: Grimmy, in the studio
2017: Grimmy, probably live from Hull (because Adele and Clara were that day)

Speaking of genre diversity, am I right in saying there was no In New Music We Trust/Where It Begins stage this year?

And one more thing: is there a video anywhere of Scott and Chris doing live Bangers on stage? It was just mentioned on air.

  8. Oh yeah, I loved the mash up!

And unless I missed it, they didn't do a big "Radio 1's Big Weekend is now open" thing on air where they open the gates and sound a klaxon and let everyone in either.

Maybe it's because it's part of a wider BBC thing this year instead of a standalone Radio 1 event.

  9. Have to say, I'm a bit jealous watching all the Instagram stories of the Radio 1 DJs right now. They're all out in Swansea and it looks like they're having such a laugh, is it weird that I'd love to be mates with them.

Chris Stark and Jordan's are particularly good, they've filmed Matt Edmondson and Molly King riding off on scooters ditching them. It's very funny.

  10. MistaJam's in to do the chart this week and next week, even though Sounds Like Friday Night finished last week and Greg's on both this week and next week.

I wonder whether he'll be going back to the chart at all, or if they're leaving MistaJam in place for the interim until Scott takes over.

I wonder who’s the main cover for all the daytime shows. I think it’s this:

    Adele - Jordan

Nick - Scott, Maybe Alice and Dev as well

    Clara - Adele and Jordan

    Scott - Matt (and Mollie)

    Greg - Jordan and Dev

    Weekend:

Alice and Dev - One of them does it solo

Greatest Hits - No idea: Maybe Katie, maybe Adele

    Matt - Jordan

It does surprise me how much cover Jordan really does looking at this and how little amount Alice and Maya do.

If anyone knows of anything that I’ve missed then just say.

That sounds about right, although it's not unheard of for Alice or Dev to do full weeks in for Scott, sometimes with Chris Stark, although it hasn't happened for a while.

It doesn't surprise me that Maya isn't used for daytime cover (although she's only been there two minutes, so we'll see). I highly doubt she could carry a personality show by herself. Alice Levine can though, but she's busy enough at weekends, nevermind weekday cover.
