Vernon Kay reduced to tears talking about Meera Syal’s secretly songwriting son

The best moment of Vernon Kay's Friday show came when Meera Syal described hearing her son Shaan's finished song for the first time after he secretly entered a songwriting competition. The actress and writer, promoting her new memoir Vigilauntie, told Vernon her son had never sung in front of the family before surprising them. "I just couldn't stop crying," she said, describing the moment she realised he had become "your own person."

Vernon got a shock of his own once Meera's final track, Elvis Presley's Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear, played out. Discussing Elvis trivia, Meera revealed the singer's father was also called Vernon. "No! Really?" Vernon replied, clearly delighted by the coincidence.

Elsewhere, Vernon kept up a running golf feud with absent colleague Gary Davies, after listeners flooded in texts asking whether Vernon lies about his handicap. Vernon insisted he plays off six, joking that Gary "carries absolute pristine notes" and irons his cash before a round. Mark Goodier presented the Drive show instead of Gary, who Vernon said was "on the golf course practising" rather than in studio.

Ten To The Top saw Gary in Glasgow score seven points after missing the year question, while Bev from Leeds used her joker wisely to finish on 18 points and take home the smart speaker prize.
