The team Christmas meal was finally happening
Scott and Chris were preparing for the programme’s Christmas dinner that evening.
The annual meal already came with history. Scott had a habit of discovering conflicting commitments at the last moment, while the previous year’s gathering had involved his dad unexpectedly joining the table.
There was therefore mild suspicion that simply getting the whole team into the same restaurant would count as a successful evening.
Scott and Chris had also been told that the following day they would record a new Playground Insults with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.
That prospect was enough to make both of them start worrying in advance about what they could possibly say to two of the biggest film stars in the world.
Lesbian Seagull flew again
A much older show obsession also returned: Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Lesbian Seagull”.
Scott and Chris had played the extraordinary song repeatedly in the past and once even took Engelbert to the same restaurant being used for that night’s Christmas meal.
Newer listeners had no idea why a Radio 1 afternoon programme was suddenly playing a gentle song about a seagull’s same-sex romance.
That only made Scott happier to bring it back.
Annie Mac played the Google Game
Annie Mac joined for another round of the Google Game, where autocomplete revealed the questions people were really asking online.
The prompt was “Is it embarrassing to…”
Suggestions included turning up to work hungover, buying condoms and not knowing the dance to Cameo’s “Candy”.
Annie worked through which situations genuinely deserved embarrassment and which were completely normal.
She also looked ahead to her Hottest Record of the Year countdown, while Scott and Chris remained focused on the much less prestigious question of whether failing to know a particular dance routine should count as a social disaster.
