27 November 2017: Chris tested how bottomless a bottomless coffee really was

Scott and Chris were suddenly on Breakfast

Nick Grimshaw was ill, so Scott and Chris were called in to cover the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Scott discovered they had received very different amounts of warning. Chris said he had been contacted late the previous evening, while Scott remembered getting the message much earlier.

The early start gave Chris an excuse to review what he described as a particularly budget-conscious weekend.

He had been to Wilko, cooked with ingredients already sitting at home and visited Birmingham’s Christmas market.

How bottomless was the coffee?

On Sunday morning Chris had gone to an Irish bar in Birmingham hoping for breakfast.

The wait for food was around 40 minutes, so he gave up on eating but paid 99p for bottomless coffee.

He drank some, left the bar to meet a friend and later returned.

That created an important question.

Did “bottomless” mean unlimited coffee only while you remained continuously inside the building, or had Chris bought the right to refills for the entire visit — even if the visit contained a substantial gap?

Chris decided the deal still applied and helped himself to another cup.

Scott was fascinated by the confidence required to walk back in and resume a 99p bottomless-coffee arrangement as though nothing had happened.

Phones began judging people’s photographs

The show also experimented with automatic photo-search technology that could recognise people and objects in a phone’s camera roll.

Searching particular words produced some unexpectedly personal results, with family members, celebrities and Scott himself appearing under categories nobody had deliberately assigned to them.

The algorithm’s accidental judgements quickly became more entertaining than the feature it was supposed to demonstrate.
