14 June 2017: Hailee Steinfeld took on Shazam

Mr Whippy before breakfast

Chris delivered the surprise transport he had promised: an ice-cream van waiting outside Scott’s home at 5.30 in the morning with its chimes playing.

Scott sat on the floor beside the Mr Whippy machine, ate ice cream before 6.00 and arrived at the BBC to the delight of everyone who saw the vehicle.

Love Island contributed another useful phrase, “the ick”: the sudden, irreversible feeling that somebody had become unattractive. Scott and Chris also pledged to learn the complete Spanish section of “Despacito” by Friday.

Hailee faced the machine

Hailee Steinfeld joined the show and admitted that she had forgotten lyrics on stage, relying on fans to fill the gap.

She discussed filming Pitch Perfect 3, where Rebel Wilson regularly improvised alternative lines and Hailee chose to laugh in character rather than spoil a take.

Beat Shazam placed Hailee against Chris and the song-recognition app. She missed Selena Gomez’s “Hands to Myself” but identified Ed Sheeran’s “The A Team”, her own “Starving”, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, and Rihanna with Calvin Harris. Asked which group she would join for one song, she selected Little Mix.

A temperature with attitude

Scott finished with his increasingly theatrical regional weather rundown, announcing whether each part of the country would be “tap-saf” and warm enough to remove a top.

It was an unusually summery conclusion to an exceptionally early start.
