Seventeen thousand jokes required
Radio 1 had challenged Scott and Chris to tell jokes continuously for 24 hours in aid of Comic Relief. The LOLathon would begin at 4pm the following Tuesday, involve no sleep and continue long after their existing knowledge of jokes had run out.
A mathematically minded listener estimated that, at five seconds per joke, they would require 17,280 of them. Songs and guests might reduce the total, but the calculation made the scale unmistakable. Scott asked listeners to donate £3 whenever anything during the broadcast produced even a small laugh.
Hot, high maintenance and changing direction
The returning Hot and High Maintenance feature invited callers to admit that relationships with them required serious effort, but that their attractiveness made the effort worthwhile. Pandora had already demonstrated that she could not hide disappointment when a partner bought reduced flowers and left the price tag attached.
Another caller declared herself so demanding that she had given up on boys her own age and started dating sugar daddies. Scott and Chris questioned what she expected and whether older necessarily meant more mature.
Birthday presents and disappointment faces
With Chris’ birthday approaching, Scott asked what he wanted. Chris disliked the question because any specific answer sounded greedy, while asking for something small wasted the opportunity and left the buyer guessing.
The problem connected neatly with disappointment faces. Some people could perform gratitude convincingly; Pandora simply announced that the flowers were awful. A midweek Bamboleo offered temporary escape before the programme returned to the larger anxiety ahead: even the most convincing happy face might not survive hour 16 of a joke marathon.
