Back at work after 24 hours of jokes
Scott and Chris returned to their normal show only hours after completing the Radio 1 LOLathon. Listeners questioned why they had come to work at all and offered to telephone the bosses to demand a week off. The pair felt physically strange without constant jokes and music, but remained exhilarated by the result: the appeal had reached £288,302 for Comic Relief, far beyond the original £250,000 target.
Before the marathon Scott knew almost no formal jokes. Now he was convinced he had heard every one in the English language and asked people not to test him. Chris was already preparing to leave for spring break in Cancún to film another extreme-festivals documentary.
Mallory Knox bring the water back
Sam Douglas and Mikey Chapman from Mallory Knox arrived as first-time Innuendo Bingo players. Clips involving soap characters, a forceful Radio 4 question and the preparation of an American cocker repeatedly broke their concentration.
The band’s one mistake was failing to bring spare clothes before an Oxford Street show that evening. They left drenched and hoping to find a shop between Broadcasting House and the venue.
Fearne Cotton’s television delay
The team listened back to one of the marathon’s most uncomfortable moments, a live television interview with Fearne Cotton on Lorraine. A huge transmission delay caused every exchange to overlap or hang in silence. Fearne supplied jokes intended to help, but punchlines landed seconds after the presenters had responded.
At the time, Scott and Chris did not understand how bad it looked. The recording revealed Fearne appearing to receive no reaction while they seemed exhausted and rude.
