29 September 2016: A sports star anonymously admits to sleep-tickling

Gogglebox enters the wet area

Chris Steed and Stephen Webb from Gogglebox play Innuendo Bingo. Their familiarity with television makes the clips particularly effective, and both bring the commentary and expressions that normally accompany their sofa appearances into the wet studio.

The round includes excitable broadcasters, Lorraine receiving an unexpected surprise from Levi Roots and increasingly impossible wording from daytime programmes. Scott feels that he already knows the pair through television, and the soaking confirms that their humour works just as naturally away from the sofa.

Confessions behind a changed voice

An internationally successful team-sport star contacts the programme after hearing criticism of Chris for tickling his own arm. The caller is disguised with a low voice and the false name Deborah to prevent teammates identifying them.

They sometimes wake in the night with both arms pointing upwards while tickling themselves. They also require physical sensations to feel even: if somebody hits one arm, they must tap the other. A teammate once sleepwalked through a hotel holding a lamp above another player’s head, forcing somebody to intervene. Scott sees a future service allowing famous people to confess anonymously and asks the caller to recruit more sports stars.

Niall Horan reveals This Town

News arrives during the programme that Niall Horan is releasing his debut solo single. A recorded message inevitably begins “Hi, Scotty”, despite Niall knowing that Scott dislikes the shortened name, before introducing “This Town” for its first Radio 1 play.

Scott and Chris hear the gentle acoustic track and recognise the familiar Niall immediately. Clara Amfo then reveals that he will join her after five, while surprised One Direction fans film themselves screaming in cars. The secrecy and sudden release turn an ordinary Thursday into Niall’s solo launch.
