A-level results and sick voices
The Breakfast Show accompanies listeners collecting their A-level results. Chris remembers smashing his hand before his own exams and having to dictate some answers, leaving him unsure what grades would arrive. Scott and Chris read messages from successful students and direct worried listeners to the exam-results helpline.
Adele has cancelled a concert because of illness and posts a quiet, apologetic video demonstrating an excellent “sick voice”. Chris attempts to reproduce the effect by hanging upside down from a chair, but only makes himself uncomfortable. Kelly Rowland’s remote X Factor vote while ill in Miami remains their gold standard.
Tom Odell books a hotel
Chris becomes obsessed with the lyrics of Tom Odell’s “Concrete”. References to sleeping without sheets on a concrete bed sound less like romance and more like a peculiar hotel request, so he calls a Norwich hotel using only lines from the song.
The receptionist calmly offers a twin room, extra pillows and two nights for £210. Even requests for no sheets and somebody’s feet rubbing against his do not end the conversation. Scott concludes that Chris may have arranged more than accommodation and makes him call back to cancel.
Colin Furze and Tom Kerridge arrive
Inventor Colin Furze describes a giant garden swing that travels through a full 360 degrees without straps, reaching about 9.5 metres at the top. His earlier creations include a hoverbike, jet-powered vehicles and a toaster knife. Scott asks him to invent something spectacular but safe enough to bring into the BBC, perhaps for Chris’s empty house.
Tom Kerridge then returns as Innuendo Bingo royalty. Clips include Phil Vickery getting his pork out, a weightlifter who preferred the snatch, a football team drilled until it could barely walk and a debate about whether a badger is a giver or receiver. Tom’s willingness to laugh before the clips have even finished ensures another extremely wet game.
