5 August 2016: Will Smith and Margot Robbie bring Suicide Squad to Radio 1

Will remembers an old interview

Scott and Chris meet Will Smith and Margot Robbie at a grand London hotel to discuss Suicide Squad. Scott reminds Will that, after an interview roughly ten years earlier, the actor sent him a handwritten thank-you note on personalised paper. Will jokes that he no longer needs to make such gestures now that he has succeeded, while Margot is asked to send a matching note in a few weeks.

The cast describe the film as an immediate assault on the senses that needs to be experienced in a cinema. Will argues that purpose and helping other people are central to a satisfying life, one of the values that connected him with Deadshot.

Margot has never seen The Fresh Prince

Margot admits she has not watched The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She was born two years after it began and once heard Will mention Jazzy Jeff on set without understanding who he meant, assuming he might be a member of the crew. Will responds with mock outrage, although she can at least recite the opening line of the theme.

Their long working friendship has also involved poker bets settled in unusual currencies. During Focus, Margot won 20 pumpkins from Will and later demanded that he deliver them. She takes dressing up just as seriously, once recreating James Franco’s Alien from Spring Breakers down to the tattoos and cornrows.

Five minutes beneath the water

Training to play Harley Quinn began before Margot had a finished script. She prepared through gymnastics, fighting, aerial silks and breath-holding for underwater scenes. A specialist who had worked with David Blaine helped her reach five minutes without breathing, a skill she later used while swimming with whale sharks in the Philippines.

Chris is more interested in Margot’s visits to Infernos in Clapham. He worries that one of his friends may have tried to chat her up there and offers a retrospective apology if it happened. Margot cannot identify the man, leaving another mystery from the nightclub unresolved.
