11 February 2016: A fake boyfriend prepares for the graduation ball

Sam, my man

Carrie enjoyed being single but faced a graduation ball at which most of her friends expected to arrive with partners. Her former flatmate Laura regularly reminded her that she needed a boyfriend, making her the next target for Chris’s free Valentine’s service.

Chris became Sam, a trainee doctor and rugby player who supposedly resembled a young Gerard Butler. Carrie introduced him on speakerphone and claimed they had met in a club. When asked what she liked about him, she praised his bottom and began calling him “Sam, my man”.

The pair added shelves, future plans and a possible move to the countryside as the story grew increasingly elaborate. Laura sounded confused rather than convinced and texted Carrie immediately after the call, but Chris advised her to change her relationship status and continue the fiction until the ball. He also considered adding photographs or FaceTime to the premium version of the service.

Ali has your movies

With Greg James occupied by the Gregathlon, film critic Ali Plumb temporarily brought his movie review to Scott’s show. The films were Will Smith’s Concussion and Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool.

Ali found Concussion worthy but stuffy, despite Smith’s performance as the doctor challenging the American football establishment over brain injuries. Deadpool was funnier and more self-aware, with a strong marketing campaign and a deliberately irresponsible superhero, although its underlying origin story remained conventional.

One more triathlon

Greg reached Sheffield on day four, supported by cyclists, runners and crowds along the route. The challenge had become physically punishing, yet he still had to finish the run, present his programme, travel to Norwich and begin again the following morning.

Scott and Chris continued their listener-decided song contest and Alice Levine played Real or No Real. By the end of the show, Greg had only one triathlon left.
