A slippery red carpet
Scott and Chris returned from Radio 1’s Teen Awards with interviews from the red carpet and backstage. Rain had mixed with cleaning foam and made the carpet so slippery that Scott could not safely perform the crab, despite teenagers recognising him from Strictly Come Dancing and chanting for it.
They asked each guest to leave an awkward question for the next artist. Ella Henderson’s contribution reached Labrinth, later questions moved through Rixton, Little Mix, Rita Ora, Rizzle Kicks and the Vamps, and nobody knew in advance what the previous act had demanded.
Pop-star relationships become official
Scott had discovered that Rixton’s Jake Roche and Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson were together. He opened the Little Mix interview by saying he had just spoken to Jesy’s boyfriend, forcing the relationship into the open before asking about their first proper date at a Halloween attraction.
Rixton were asked whether they had ever cheated on anyone. Little Mix received a question about getting dressed in the dark, while later guests were challenged to identify the act they were least excited to see. The chain became less polite as the event continued and Scott grew audibly more tired.
Ariana remains unexpectedly normal
Ariana Grande sat down after performing and collecting an award. Scott and Chris discussed the speed with which she moved between work, interviews and public reaction, and the effort she made to leave that world behind when she returned to friends.
They tested her with Normo or Not. Ariana said she did not use a code name in hotels and could not remember solving a problem simply by spending money. When asked when she last bought something for herself, she needed help remembering, a rare answer that moved her away from ordinary life.
She had recently been named the sexiest vegetarian and had more Twitter followers than Miley Cyrus, but remained less showbiz in conversation than expected. Scott admitted he had heard stories before meeting her and was surprised by how warm and straightforward she appeared.
The interviews also included Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw preparing to host, the Vamps celebrating multiple awards and Rizzle Kicks confronting increasingly awkward questions. By the end, the foamy carpet, screaming audience and endless chain of artists had produced a complete second show from the previous day’s event.
