Talk Dirty reaches the family
The “Talk Dirty to Me” experiment was still bothering Chris. He remained convinced that Jason Derulo’s number one was recognisable enough for almost anybody to hear the phrase and automatically sing its hook.
After mixed results with friends, Scott wanted to raise the stakes by calling relatives. That led them to Chris’s Auntie Trees, although Scott became almost as interested in the way Chris pronounced “Trees” as he was in the game itself.
Chris rang, exchanged normal family pleasantries and then abruptly said: “Talk dirty to me.” Auntie Trees did not sing Jason Derulo. Instead, she gamely suggested that his shoes were grubby and could do with a polish.
It was a failure for the theory but a victory for the show. Scott immediately became obsessed with repeatedly playing Chris saying “Hi, Trees”, listeners adopted the phrase and the actual purpose of the phone call was rapidly forgotten.
They continued testing the hook on other contacts, including people closer to Radio 1 management, with the same mixture of recognition, confusion and people interpreting “talk dirty” much too literally.
Freshers check in from Finland
The Freshers Line continued to collect updates from students who had promised Scott they would not abandon the show after arriving at university. A group from Finland also got involved despite not entirely understanding the premise.
Chris admitted that several weeks of Freshers gigs had begun to catch up with him. He had been DJing at an event for the Professional Cricketers’ Association and only belatedly realised the man repeatedly giving his song choices a thumbs down was cricketer Ryan Sidebottom.
Radio 4 Extra celebrates its Bingo debut
Radio 4 Extra had noticed that one of its clips made the previous day’s Innuendo Bingo and excitedly asked whether that meant the station was now cool. Scott felt that asking the question probably answered it.
He and Chris also looked back at Gemma Cairney’s soaking, which had already become one of the week’s videos they were recommending listeners watch.
Gary Lucy and a fact about Swindon
Gary Lucy joined for Friday’s Real or No Real. Among the round’s curiosities was a fact about Swindon, giving Scott another excuse to elevate an extremely ordinary piece of British geography into something worthy of dramatic game-show music.
The week ended with the serious Talk It Out campaign having somehow given way to Freshers calls, Radio 4 innuendo and Scott repeatedly shouting “Hi, Trees” at Chris.
