Chris awards the Fun and Filth Cabaret four and a half stocks
Show introducer Fred remembered being accidentally left alone in London’s Natural History Museum during an evening event. He emerged from the toilet after repeated calls for a mysterious Mr Frost to find the galleries deserted, although none of the dinosaurs came to life before he located his parents outside. In Edinburgh, the cameras and red velvet had disappeared from Radio 1’s temporary studio, leaving Scott, Beccy and Chris to look back at the final cabaret without worrying how they appeared on television.
The Posh Radio 4 Lady had opened the last show with “Lady Marmalade”, carefully translating its French and bringing Fazer on for the final chorus. Barry Morgan then became the team’s unexpected obsession, arriving in a 1970s safari suit with a huge Hammond organ and demonstrating his “one finger method” through a sequence of extravagant facial expressions. Scott said moving the instrument on and off stage had taken far longer than the act itself, while Beccy admired that Barry remained in character even backstage.
Friday’s Innuendo Bingo Gold revived clips about soaking balls in hot water, a great place for shags and the gap between the balls and the hole. The game turned into a stand-off when Beccy threatened to empty a bottle over Chris, eventually soaking his head after persuading him to put down his own water. Chris then delivered his supposedly impartial review of the week’s Fun and Filth Cabaret, calling it an event comparable with the Olympic closing ceremony and awarding four and a half stocks because giving his own show five might have looked biased.
Axis of Awesome joined the programme before the final three performances of their Fringe run. They said the festival had absorbed the energy of the Olympics, although their early show time mainly left them free to drink rather than see other acts. The trio performed “In the Club Tonight”, a deliberately repetitive party song, and expected that their annual Radio 1 visit would resume at roughly the same time the following year.
Jameela Jamil prepared to host eight hours of live Edinburgh coverage on BBC Three, featuring 40 stand-up acts between 21:00 and 05:00. She expected comedians and alcohol to create plenty of moments in which the programme would need to cut back to her, and named Tim Key as her festival highlight. Scott, Beccy and Chris ended by choosing their own memories from the week, ranging from Paloma Faith and EastEnd Cabaret to Chris’s less artistic favourite, the catering truck’s beef olives.
