Scott Mills goes backstage at the Brit Awards
Radio 1 took over backstage at the Brit Awards, with Scott and the team navigating the slightly chaotic world behind the red carpet. The scale of the event was part of the joke from the start, from the supposedly upgraded seating for stars to the prospect of asking famous guests questions they had already answered all day.
Danny Howard was on the red carpet, speaking to artists including Florence Welch, Plan B, Labrinth and Blur’s Graham Coxon. The interviews moved between the awards themselves and the practical questions nobody usually asks, such as what happens to a Brit after somebody wins it and wants to go out partying.
One Direction provided one of the biggest moments. The group were nominated for British Single and were still cautiously saying they would need a meeting before deciding who might deliver an acceptance speech, despite the team’s confidence in their fans’ voting power.
Harry Styles was also pressed on his wish to see Susan Boyle at the ceremony, while Louis Tomlinson’s search for pancakes became an unlikely side plot. The band’s matching tailored outfits were declared so tight that a badly judged movement could have created its own awards-night drama.
The broadcast mixed genuine access with the show’s usual refusal to treat celebrity events too solemnly. Between backstage chats, family members in the audience and Scott’s determination to clip One Direction saying they loved him, it felt like a major music night filtered through the programme’s normal chaos.
