Zac Efron becomes executive producer of Scott’s film
Still on Breakfast cover, Scott found a National Express driver willing to add an announcement for the Radio 1 Movie to his coach safety briefing. Andy was due to make several Liverpool-to-Leeds trips before the Wednesday premiere, so Scott happily gave him a credit at the end of the film for his services to publicity.
Beccy was also trying to protect her voice, having made herself a large “Shh, I’m on voice rest” badge. Scott had seen a similar badge worn by Marcus Collins earlier that day and found the whole idea far too grand, particularly once Beccy moved hers to her forehead so nobody would miss it.
The main guest was Zac Efron, in to discuss New Year’s Eve. He looked back on High School Musical, described playing bike messenger Paul in the new film, and explained that the chance to work with Michelle Pfeiffer helped persuade him to join the cast. His phone-book method for famous friends was equally revealing: Tom Cruise was saved simply as “Maverick”.
Scott seized the opportunity to ask about film premieres, because his own was imminent in Carlisle. Zac advised him to stay for a first premiere and enjoy it, even if stars sometimes slip away to celebrate rather than watch a film they have already seen. Scott then secured his agreement to be listed as an executive producer alongside the mysterious Norman Tarantino.
Before he left, Zac recorded a plug for the Radio 1 Movie, telling listeners to watch it at 7pm on the Radio 1 website. Scott and Beccy were delighted, though they felt Zac’s calm delivery sounded less like a blockbuster endorsement than an appeal for a monthly donation. The programme also found time for Beccy’s mince-pie breakfasts and Scott’s confusion over when Christmas excess was acceptable.
