Scott premieres the Radio 1 Movie in Carlisle
Scott broadcast from the University of Cumbria’s library in Carlisle ahead of the Radio 1 Movie premiere. It was the city where much of the Big Weekend material had been filmed, and the library setting gave Scott plenty of chances to pretend that loud music and radio links were entirely normal academic activity.
Students on film and television courses joined him for a mock masterclass. Asked about microphones, camera angles and lighting, Scott confidently recommended a hypercardioid microphone, “looking up” and “looking down”, then simply turning the Kelvin scale up. Actual industry guests were also on hand to offer rather more useful advice.
The film’s publicity machine reached its peak. One listener had promoted it naked at Bournemouth University, another had placed a poster on her grandmother’s mobility scooter, and Anthony had written the premiere details on his stomach. Chris hosted an unofficial suited-and-snacks screening at a mate’s house in Pinner, with an ill-advised winter barbecue under consideration.
At the Carlisle venue, Rhianna inspected the short red carpet, cardboard Oscars and welcome sign, then advised Scott to do his best Tom Cruise. He attempted to phone a listener’s mum from the carpet, but immediately got the daughter’s name wrong. Beccy meanwhile interviewed listeners in the film and made sure the snack situation was acceptable.
Scott’s invented Carlisle International Film Festival did exactly what it was designed to do: award everything to him. The Radio 1 Movie won Best Picture, Scott won Best Director and Best Supporting Actress, and he also collected the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. With Zac Efron’s recorded plug still playing, the movie finally premiered online at 7pm.
