15 September 2011: Jedward turn Grimmy’s show into controlled chaos

Jedward turn Grimmy’s show into controlled chaos

Nick Grimshaw was still covering for Scott when he spoke to Serena, who was on a treadmill in preparation for a 21st-birthday trip to Ibiza. Rather than offer sensible encouragement, Grimmy kept asking her to increase the speed and incline, imagining the call ending with her silently disappearing into the distance. It established the afternoon’s deliberately chaotic tone before its main guests even arrived.

The guests were Jedward, and Grimmy was openly nervous about the scale of the occasion. Radio 1 had put a barrier outside for them, the sort normally reserved for the biggest pop acts, while one fan had sent in a photograph of an elaborate “I love Jedward” tattoo. Grimmy treated their arrival as both a proper celebrity booking and a warning that the studio might shortly become unmanageable.

Before the twins came in, he played Danny Howard Points with Smooth Talking Dan. Grimmy guessed tweets from Boris Johnson, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J, while treating every correct answer as a serious step towards his target of 1,000 points. The game also supplied the perfect link to Jedward, whose stream-of-consciousness Twitter style was immediately recognisable.

John and Edward then arrived at full speed, explaining that Celebrity Big Brother had helped people understand them. They said they had broken things in the house, punctured the swimming pool and acted as informal agony uncles whenever other housemates were having a crisis. Their account moved so quickly that Grimmy could barely interrupt, but he was happy to let the interview run on its own manic energy.

The twins also discussed their shared phone, their ambitions for a slicker new music video and the possibility of Tara Reid appearing in it. Grimmy was fascinated by the way they did almost everything together, from interviews to touring, while Jedward insisted that their normal life was simply being awake, enthusiastic and ready to go again. It was a full-on guest spot, capped later by the discovery that they had said “OK” 64 times in about 40 minutes.
