Beccy’s birthday cheese goes uneaten as Scott reveals another Edinburgh guest
Beccy was absent for her birthday, having taken the day off just as a pile of presents arrived for her at Radio 1. Chris had brought flowers, cakes and cream, while Beccy had requested a sizeable amount of cheese. The difficulty, as Scott pointed out, was that none of it was likely to remain fresh by the time she next saw the team in Edinburgh.
Scott could not resist questioning whether it was really Beccy’s birthday at all. The show imagined her changing the date on Facebook simply to collect a day of birthday messages and an authorised absence, which developed into a wider discussion about how easily people will send automatic good wishes when prompted online.
The proposed experiment was simple: change your Facebook birthday, wait for the messages, then change it again the following week and see who repeats the gesture. Scott liked the prospect of giving yourself regular birthday attention, while Chris waited to see whether anyone would fall for his newly altered date.
Festival preparations occupied much of the rest of the programme. Scott revealed another guest for the Radio 1 Fun and Filth Cabaret, adding to a bill already featuring names such as Joey Essex, David Hasselhoff and Edith Bowman. The show revelled in the fact that the line-up made little conventional sense, which was precisely why it appealed.
By the end, the team were looking ahead to the following week’s move to Edinburgh. Beccy’s birthday absence had become an excuse to eat or lose her presents, and the cabaret had become the main event: a string of free-ticket plans, strange performers and Scott promising a festival show that would be anything but restrained.
