Dynamo leaves Scott with a newspaper prediction he cannot explain
The mystery began before Dynamo arrived. A taped-up cash box had been delivered to Radio 1 with firm instructions not to open it or lose it. Scott immediately wanted to know what was inside, Beccy wondered who should be trusted with it, and the only certainty was that leaving a tempting sealed box in the studio was never likely to make anyone less curious.
When Dynamo arrived for his interview, he asked Scott to choose one of that day’s newspapers and find a positive story. Scott picked the Metro and settled on a feature about record-breaking mountaineer Kenton Cool, under the headline “We’ve a lot to be proud of”. There was no obvious reason the box, which had been in the studio since Monday, should have anything to do with a newspaper printed that morning.
After Dynamo left, Scott finally opened it. Inside was a detailed drawing of the exact Metro page he had selected, including the headline, pictures, colours and smaller elements around the story. The studio reaction was less a polished scream of amazement than bafflement and irritation: Scott kept trying to establish how it had happened, while Beccy’s chief disappointment was that the box did not contain food.
Dynamo explained that he had learned magic from his grandfather after being bullied at school, first using tricks to unsettle the boys who picked on him. He later developed the act into a show, used a Prince’s Trust loan to buy a camcorder and laptop, and built an audience through YouTube before making Magician Impossible. The interview made the scale of his progress clear, even as Scott continued to treat him as a possible professional thief.
The prediction was the centrepiece, but the show also caught Scott worrying about an upcoming wedding speech for his friend Laura. His first attempt at a draft was simply the lyrics to DJ Sammy’s “Heaven”, which Beccy immediately rejected. By the end of the day, the magic box remained unexplained and Scott had still not written a speech, but both problems had generated exactly the amount of studio panic the programme wanted.
