Dionne Bromfield offers Beccy a rap job
Scott’s supposed affair was still causing trouble. Gemma remained convinced he was seeing her boyfriend because of the Heat photograph and the handyman visits, despite the boyfriend now taking Gemma for a nice lunch and buying flowers. Scott accidentally made matters worse by texting the man about moving things from his back garden, prompting the reply: “Is this a honey trap?”
Dionne Bromfield came in to discuss her single and the increasingly strange experience of being recognised. She had recently been asked to sign a fan’s stomach, which became too awkward when the fan lifted her top. Dionne left with the safer compromise of signing her cheek instead.
The interview also covered the less pleasant side of visibility. Dionne said she tried not to read negative comments linking her success solely to her godmother, Amy Winehouse, though she admitted the temptation was there. At 15, she was already clear that online criticism could be harsh, especially when people were not saying it face to face.
She described attending theatre school, where classmates were used to taking time out for auditions, films and work. Scott imagined the corridors as a version of Fame, full of jazz hands and people singing ordinary requests, while Dionne said there were thankfully more dancers than singers.
Amy Winehouse’s role as both Dionne’s godmother and record-label boss also came up. Dionne recalled arguing over a word in a song before recognising Amy’s five Grammys probably made her advice worth taking. When the team played Beccy rapping Dionne’s track in an emphatically Somerset accent, Dionne said she had heard worse and left the door open for a replacement if Diggy Simmons was unavailable.
