17 March 2011: David Hasselhoff visits Breakfast

David Hasselhoff visits Breakfast

Scott began by explaining that he had been trying to arrange David Hasselhoff’s visit since the weekend. The correspondence had been suitably unconventional, including a reply directing him to “the baby Jesus”.

The team worried about whether the car booked for Hasselhoff would be large enough, largely because they had convinced themselves that the Baywatch star might be too tall for it. Scott’s anticipation made the whole situation feel bigger before the guest had even arrived.

Chris had been out with Smooth Talking Dan, acting as his wingman after the pair had read a dating book. The results were debated with the usual mixture of misplaced confidence and discomfort.

Dear Scott supplied more possible careers for Chris, including celebrity spray tanning. Chris could see no realistic way of charging Scott and Beccy, and also seemed doubtful that the job itself was a sensible route forward.

Hasselhoff’s appearance was the day’s real prize, but the programme never stopped treating the studio’s smaller absurdities as equally important. Scott’s enthusiasm was infectious, even when the plan had begun with a message to a celebrity and a very uncertain car booking.
