Sara Cox takes over as Scott heads to Kenya
Sara Cox took the chair while Scott travelled to Kenya for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Desert Trek. She was in for the day and the rest of the week, reuniting with Beccy and cheerfully making clear that Scott was not walking all the way to Africa, he was flying there first because the 100-kilometre challenge still lay ahead.
Her first link set out the immediate picture: Scott was en route, the trekkers would be acclimatising and checking their kit, and the expedition would demand more than a rucksack full of the usual holiday essentials. Sara imagined the practical preparations, from water and energy bars to cameras and sun protection, before promising updates from people making the walk with him.
She also brought listeners a behind-the-scenes story from Chris Moyles’ birthday show at the Radio Theatre. Sara had arrived early to avoid spoiling the surprise, struggled to get into the building and then had to navigate the post-show crush of performers, food and celebrity greetings with an egg-and-smoked-salmon sandwich still very much on her breath.
The story grew into an account of JLS coming off stage and greeting the people nearby. Sara was delighted to see them, but worried that she had gone in for one cheek-kiss too many after eating the sandwich. It was a very Sara Cox tale, affectionate, self-deprecating and detailed enough to make the whole backstage scene feel slightly chaotic.
The programme also revisited Beccy’s earlier imagined version of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which Sara declared a personal favourite, and toyed with an unsuitable “desert challenge” involving trifle ingredients. The real challenge remained firmly in focus, though: Scott had gone to Kenya to help raise money for Comic Relief, while Sara kept the home end of the show lively in his absence.
