19 September 2024: Vernon is first on the register — but nowhere near the studio

Vernon misses the start

Scott remained on air after the breakfast show because Vernon Kay had not reached Broadcasting House.

Vernon sent a voice note from a station platform, admitting he had never expected to be in this position.

He was miles from the studio and increasingly frustrated as other passengers watched him record updates into his phone.

First on the register

Vernon tried to find a positive side.

Because he had sent the first message to his own show, he claimed the coveted first place on the register.

Scott prepared a certificate for him despite the obvious problem that Vernon was not actually there to collect it.

How long will Scott stay?

Listeners asked how long the unexpected extension would continue and whether Scott would receive enhanced pay.

One suggested “double bubble”, while Vernon jokingly advised Scott that continuing from breakfast into mid-mornings should qualify for triple time.

Scott confirmed he had already sent the necessary message.

The show carries on

Scott continued with music, travel updates and messages while waiting for Vernon’s arrival.

He joked that he could not stay indefinitely and worried about what would happen if Jeremy Vine also failed to appear later in the day.

Handover

Scott eventually handed over once Vernon completed his disrupted journey.
