The ten-word memory test
Scott challenged listeners and members of the team to remember ten apparently unrelated words from the previous day.
The test had been inspired by concerns that modern attention spans and memory had become increasingly unreliable.
Listeners spent the morning trying to hold the list in their heads without writing it down.
Some admitted forgetting the first word before Scott had even reached the second.
The team attempt
The team answered in turn, with anybody naming an incorrect word immediately eliminated.
Bobby opened successfully with “milk”.
Ben confidently said “tobacco”, which had not appeared on the list, and was removed.
Emilio correctly remembered “tattoo”.
Further attempts included “fridge” and “conservatory”, while several confident answers turned out to have been invented by the participants’ own memories.
The exercise confirmed that remembering a short list overnight was harder than expected.
The Birthday Game: Dawn
Dawn from Devon was travelling to Hayle near St Ives with her partner Dan, friend Kirsty and Kirsty’s daughter.
She wanted strong 1980s music, boy bands and a little cheese.
Her first spin was Rod Stewart’s Maggie May, number one for five weeks in 1971.
Dawn liked it but gambled.
Her second was Simply Red’s Fairground, the group’s only UK number one.
She preferred Rod Stewart but continued to the third spin.
Her compulsory final song was Christina Aguilera’s Genie in a Bottle, number one in 1999.
Dawn regarded it as her favourite of the three and was pleased that the gamble had eventually paid off.
Scott called it a perfect pop song and marked its 25th anniversary.
Elmo returns
After the response to his World Mental Health Day appearance, Elmo returned for a special sing-along Wonder Years.
Scott said listeners had repeatedly told him the previous afternoon had made them smile and lifted their mood.
Elmo joined the Friday feature as the programme travelled through past years and familiar songs.
The week in review
Scott revisited Fearne Cotton’s teenage pen-pal letters, Dame Joan Collins’s Dynasty memories and Elmo’s first appearance.
He also confirmed that Fearne would return to read the replies written by her pen pal Harry.
Handover
Scott handed over after the memory test, Elmo’s Wonder Years and Dawn’s successful third spin.
