Fearne’s letters
Fearne Cotton had found a box of old letters from her teenage years.
The collection included correspondence from pen pals and friends at a time when most communication happened by post or on the family telephone.
Scott planned to bring Fearne into the studio the following week and make her read the letters aloud.
Listeners sent stories of pen-pal schemes run through cereals and magazines, including friendships that had continued from the 1980s into adulthood.

Holly contacted Scott after hearing that Rylan was exploring LinkedIn as a possible dating platform.
She suggested a trend from America where friends created PowerPoint presentations to pitch single people to potential partners.
The presentation could include photographs, achievements and a formal SWOT analysis covering strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Listeners supplied possible selling points for Rylan, including his style, teeth, hairdressing ability, banana bread, Eurovision access and kindness towards his mother.
Scott began treating the idea as a serious campaign.
The Birthday Game: Deborah
Deborah’s favourite song of all time was Spagna’s Call Me.
She associated it with childhood holidays and the era of European hotel discos.
Because it had not reached number one, it could not appear in the Birthday Game.
Her first spin was Pink’s So What. Deborah liked it but rejected it.
The second was David Soul’s Silver Lady. She gambled again.
Her compulsory final song was All Saints’ Black Coffee, number one in 2000.
Deborah immediately regretted not keeping David Soul and admitted she might even have preferred Pink.
Scott sent her a birthday card as consolation.
Rylan’s selling points
The PowerPoint discussion continued after the Birthday Game.
