12 April 2024: The Prodigy wins the Birthday Game and Girls Aloud explain the tour set list

The Birthday Game

The Friday contestant wanted energetic 1990s music and was prepared to use all three spins.

The first choice was rejected.

The second was Bucks Fizz’s Eurovision winner Making Your Mind Up.

Scott expected the Eurovision connection to make it difficult to abandon, but the contestant decided it was not the right birthday song and gambled again.

The compulsory final result was the Prodigy’s Firestarter, the group’s first UK number one.

The contestant described it as comfortably the strongest of the three and accepted the result.

Listeners were divided, with several disappointed that a UK Eurovision winner had been rejected.

Girls Aloud after the interview

Scott replayed highlights from the previous afternoon’s Girls Aloud appearance.

The group explained that their 21 top-ten hits created a genuine set-list problem.

They promised that the major high-energy records would remain and insisted fans would not notice the small number of songs removed.

Scott warned anybody seated near him and Rylan at the tour that their reaction was likely to be extremely loud.

New Music Friday

The programme included new releases alongside large Friday favourites.

Scott also continued Radio 2’s ABBA anniversary coverage and the vote to find the nation’s ultimate ABBA song.

Sleep-talking highlights

Scott revisited messages and recordings from people who spoke in their sleep.

One particularly memorable recording involved somebody demanding “shiny, shiny shark shoes”.

The 2000s Wonder Years

The Wonder Years concentrated entirely on the 2000s.

The selection included Christina Milian, Groove Armada, Destiny’s Child and other major pop and dance records from the decade.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox for All Request Friday after the all-2000s Wonder Years.
