Mel’s Crufts update
Mel returned after playing the Birthday Game the previous week.
Her two whippets had both been placed in their classes at Crufts.
She said the family had taken “the best dogs home” regardless of the result and congratulated Lagotto Romagnolo Orca, who won Best in Show.
Scott admitted he had watched the final himself and wondered what had happened to him.
Twenty years since Richard Hillman
Scott marked 20 years since Richard Hillman drove Gail Platt and her family into the canal on Coronation Street.
The scene used You and Me Song by The Wannadies, a record Scott said he could no longer hear without thinking about the crash.
Rylan gatecrashes Melodifestivalen
Rylan had travelled to Sweden during a rare weekend without his Radio 2 programme.
He attended Melodifestivalen, the enormous televised selection process used to choose Sweden’s Eurovision entry.
Around 82% of the Swedish television audience watched the final.
Rylan was invited into the commentary booth and unexpectedly ended up commentating on the programme.
He later congratulated Loreen live on Swedish television and received a kiss from her.
Loreen won the selection with Tattoo, returning to Eurovision after her 2012 victory with Euphoria.
Scott noted that another win would place her alongside Johnny Logan as a two-time Eurovision champion and draw Sweden level with Ireland’s record.
Bobby returns from Country to Country
Bobby Pryor returned after hosting Radio 2’s stage at Country to Country.
She spent three days introducing emerging performers at the Indigo and later joined Bob Harris for the main country programme.
Bobby described herself as exhausted but extremely happy.
Scott said the event had helped educate him about country music after presenting his own themed Wonder Years.
The Birthday Game: Linda
Linda from Lincolnshire turned 54 and had recently returned from visiting her daughter near The Hague.
Her next holiday would take her to Gran Canaria at Easter.
She shared her birthday with Mikaela Shiffrin, Linda Robson, Neil Sedaka and Candi Staton.
Her first spin was Manhattan Transfer’s Chanson d’Amour. Linda rejected it immediately.
The second was Dead or Alive’s You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), number one in 1985.
Linda accepted it because she secretly liked the song and did not want to risk the final choice.
Mae Muller closes Eurovision
Scott received confirmation that Mae Muller would perform last in the Eurovision final.
He considered position 26 a strong draw because viewers would hear I Wrote a Song immediately before voting.
Ukraine would perform in position 19.
The Music Police
Scott closed Simon’s previous case after identifying his whistled melody as The Shuffle.
A new case came from Mark in the Cotswolds, who drove a lorry and had spent an entire night humming an unknown piece.
The melody sounded like a television theme, an advert or possibly a film score.
One listener suggested the Yorkshire Tea advert, while another thought it resembled Open All Hours.
Scott collected the evidence and promised a full investigation later in the week.
Handover
Scott handed over after leaving Mark’s Music Police case open and previewing Rylan’s appearance the following afternoon.
