9 February 2023: Shania Twain calls a superfan and sings From This Moment

Twenty years since Pop Idol

Scott marked 20 years since Will Young beat Gareth Gates in the first Pop Idol final.

He remembered voting for Gareth and being convinced the spiky-haired favourite would win.

Both finalists had recorded Evergreen, but Will won by 4.6 million votes to 4.1 million.

Listeners remembered repeatedly voting, crying when Gareth lost and watching the campaign buses travel around Britain.

The Birthday Game: Diane

Diane’s husband arranged secret birthday and anniversary trips every year.

She knew they would travel by car and stay away overnight, but had no idea where they were going.

Diane turned 48 and preferred late-1980s and early-1990s music.

Her first spin was Slik’s Forever and Ever, number one in 1976. She rejected it for being too slow.

The second was The Jam’s Town Called Malice, number one in 1982. Diane said the word “malice” did not fit her preference for positivity and kindness.

Her compulsory final spin was Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do, number one in 2015.

Diane immediately recognised it as one of the songs associated with her relationship and was thrilled.

Scott recalled watching Fifty Shades of Grey, which featured the song, with Vanessa Feltz.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain joined Scott following the release of Queen of Me.

Before the interview, Scott had asked listeners to contact him if they were genuinely named after her.

Three different Shanias joined the conversation and explained how frequently people responded to their introductions with references to That Don’t Impress Me Much.

Shania initially suspected Scott was playing a joke but accepted that the stories were genuine.

Lauren’s surprise call

One of the women, Shania Joyner, had been named by her mother Lauren.

Scott called Lauren without warning and introduced himself before passing the phone to Shania Twain.

Lauren explained that Shania’s music had marked major moments in her life.

She had listened while dating her future husband, named her daughter after the singer and later heard From This Moment On during her daughter’s wedding ceremony.

Shania sang a brief line of the song to Lauren over the phone.

The programme then surprised Lauren and her daughter with tickets to Shania’s tour.

Lauren initially thought the entire call might be a prank.

Handover

Scott handed over to Sara Cox after thanking Shania and admitting that meeting one of his heroes had left him unsure what achievement could follow it.
