The first week reaches Friday
Scott thanked listeners for the messages, voice notes and emails that had accompanied his first week on Radio 2.
He revisited Toni’s Backstreet Boys welcome, Danny Jones’s complaint about Star Girl being rejected and Lulu’s celebrity Birthday Game.
Every contestant during the first week had risked both early choices and been left with the compulsory third song.
Old technology that refuses to disappear
Following the discussion about love letters sent by fax, Scott asked listeners about old technology they continued to use.
Examples included an Amstrad CB radio from the 1980s, an early Nokia phone and music players that had long disappeared from most homes.
Scott joked that it was difficult to send a WhatsApp message from a Nokia dating from 2001, although one listener had managed to contact the show regardless.
The Birthday Game: Dave
Dave turned 60 and was nominated as a surprise by his wife Helen.
He planned to celebrate with a family meal the following evening.
His first song was Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff’s version of Dizzy. Dave rejected it despite protests from listeners.
His second was Robson & Jerome, number one on his birthday in 1996. He passed again.
The final spin left him with Robbie Williams’s Candy, co-written by Gary Barlow and number one in 2012.
Dave admitted that, in retrospect, he might have preferred Robson & Jerome.
A Eurovision family update
Lisa joined Scott after previously asking him and Rylan to reveal the sex of her baby during a Eurovision broadcast.
The announcement had been made during a semi-final postcard before Portugal’s entry, telling family and friends watching at home that she was expecting a boy.
The baby, Ben, was now ten weeks old and had already been introduced to Eurovision music.
Lisa and her husband had booked accommodation near Liverpool for the 2023 contest and hoped to secure tickets for a family show.
The Wonder Years return
At 3.30, Scott revived one of his established Radio 1 features.
The Wonder Years began in 1989 and moved forward one year at a time with a major song representing each year.
The first run included Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam and later 1990s dance and pop favourites.
Listeners remembered using the original feature as the soundtrack to journeys and welcomed its return as part of Friday afternoons.
First week complete
Scott said the launch week had passed quickly and thanked the audience for making the transition feel welcoming.
The first five programmes had established the Birthday Game, Speedmates, listener-led conversations and The Wonder Years as the foundations of his Radio 2 afternoon show.
