Alexander Skarsgård sings along to Unpopular Opinion

Radio 1 BreakfastRecap of the show on

Greg James could barely believe it when Alexander Skarsgård nailed the Unpopular Opinion theme tune on his first attempt, with Olivia Colman cheering him on. "Thanks for guiding me through that," Skarsgård said, after Colman walked him through the "singing" bit most guests dread. The pair were in to promote their new film Wicca, in which Skarsgård plays a man woven entirely out of wicker, and Greg couldn't resist showing them the memes it's already spawned. Colman admitted she'd watched the film cold and come away thinking it was "a lovely story about welcoming people that are different," only to discover online that most fans had, in her words, simply "gone a bit horny" for the basket. Skarsgård took it in good humour, joking about "kindling man" as a inevitable follow-up role.

Unpopular Opinion itself threw up some decent arguments once the actors left. Freya insisted jam on toast needs no butter, a claim both Greg and his guests rejected outright. Listeners eventually crowned Ellie's entry the winner with 47% of the BBC Sounds vote: "What's under the sea is absolutely none of our business," a line that also got Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah laughing later in the show.

Elsewhere, Greg played clips of Paul McCartney telling Amy Poehler's podcast that he can remember being born — "white tiles, very sort of hygienic" — and that the late Queen apparently had a soft spot for him in his twenties. Teacher Becky did well enough in the daily news quiz to reach Friday's final, despite being docked a point for timing.
