Congratulations, Dame Elaine Paige
Scott celebrated Elaine Paige receiving a damehood.
Elaine joined the programme to discuss the honour, the messages she had received and the long career in musical theatre that had led to it.
She reflected on roles and songs that had remained attached to her across decades, while Scott treated the title as a national Radio 2 celebration.
The conversation covered theatre audiences, live performance and the strange formality of being called Dame Elaine after years of being familiar simply as Elaine.
The Easiest Quiz
The quiz opened a new week and prompted another argument with the judges when a contestant believed a reasonable answer had been rejected.
Elder vs Millennial: Emilio
Emilio represented the younger team in another full round of Elder vs Millennial.
The first reference was the repeated “Whassup?” from the 1999 Budweiser advert. Emilio recognised that people still said it but had no idea where it came from and guessed it might have been from a film or television programme.
Scott explained that many older listeners immediately associated the sound with a beer advert and remembered using it as a ringtone or greeting.
The round continued with other advertisements, objects and sounds from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Emilio’s guesses were compared with messages from families playing along in cars and offices.
Scott again emphasised that the feature was about introducing younger colleagues to shared references rather than declaring one generation superior.
Zoe Ball’s early night
Scott joined a social-media trend by calling Zoe Ball at 7.45pm simply to tell her he was having an early night.
Zoe was watering her garden and reminded him that she had tried to warn him about the breakfast-show alarm. The video was posted on Radio 2’s Instagram.
16 June 2025: Vernon Kay
The handover returned to Dame Elaine Paige and the references Emilio had failed to recognise.
