2 April 2025: Rylan, Anastacia and Pop Top 10

After the April Fools confusion

Scott began by promising that Wednesday’s programme was live and that there would be no repeat-show trick. Listeners were still reporting that they had restarted BBC Sounds or checked whether the date on their phones was correct.

The team had also been out together the previous evening, making the reassurance slightly less convincing as everybody adjusted to another early start.

The Easiest Quiz: Natalie the secret juggler

Natalie from Manchester revealed that she was a secret juggler. Only close friends and family knew she could juggle balls, clubs and hoops, although she sometimes practised privately in her office because she found it mindful.

Scott encouraged her to become “out and proud” about the skill. Natalie said she had trained for the quiz by listening back on BBC Sounds, while her family invented rapid-fire questions for her.

She had also been awake twice in the night with her two-year-old and hoped the quiz might show sympathy. Natalie wanted the golden toaster because she did not own a toaster or even an egg cup, relying on the grill whenever she wanted toast.

Her appearance continued the week’s growing disagreement between contestants and the quiz over whether the rules were genuinely fair.

Rylan

Rylan joined Scott to launch the second series of Pop Top 10, the BBC Sounds programme in which they ranked songs from a themed list with a guest.

He explained that each guest could immediately remove one track, insert a wildcard and then spend the rest of the episode arguing with Scott and Rylan about the final order. Rylan described the format as ideal for anyone who loved pop music and “having a row”.

The first new episode featured Anastacia. Rylan recalled her enthusiasm, the stories she told and the moment she fell from the studio sofa before being helped back up.

Other forthcoming guests included Trevor Nelson discussing 1990s R&B. Rylan said Trevor arrived with so many stories from the era that ranking the songs became only part of the attraction.

The conversation ended with Rylan performing Anastacia’s Left Outside Alone. Scott supplied encouragement while Rylan committed fully to the vocal, turning the song into a live studio performance rather than a brief impression.

The handover returned to Rylan’s Anastacia performance and the relief that Wednesday’s programme had not secretly become Tuesday again.
