Passing as a football fan
Scott took the phrases supplied by listeners into the Radio 2 office.
He approached colleagues with statements such as:
– “The thing about England is they always try and walk it in”
– “Bellingham reminds me of Rooney in 2004”
– “Do you think Gareth has the right tactics with the midfield?”
– “It’s a game of two halves”
– “Jumpers for goalposts”
– “How do you play Foden and Bellingham together?”
The opening lines occasionally worked, but Scott had no answer when genuine fans responded in detail.
He repeatedly abandoned the conversations and walked away.
The Birthday Game: Anna
Anna from Carmarthenshire turned 38 and worked on a dairy farm while also looking after her two young daughters.
Her work included breeding calves, which led to an explanation Scott decided not to explore too graphically.
Anna wanted 1990s pop or heavy metal.
Her first spin was Charlene’s spoken-word-heavy I’ve Never Been to Me. She rejected it.
The second was Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale. Anna rejected that too and asked for an absolute belter.
Her compulsory final song was Vengaboys’ Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!, number one in 1999.
Anna immediately associated it with being in Year 9 and accepted it enthusiastically.
Lionel Richie at 75
Scott marked Lionel Richie’s 75th birthday and pointed listeners towards BBC archive performances and interviews.
Handover
Scott handed over after accepting that a few memorised phrases had not made him a football expert.
