Radio 2’s equine roll call
Scott dedicated part of the programme to horses, ponies and the people caring for them.
Messages arrived from stables across the country.
Listeners introduced Bert and Ernie in Manchester, abandoned ponies Socks and Big Mama, and horses called Elliot, Benji and Will.i.am.
Owners said Radio 2 remained on in yards throughout the day, while an equine vet sent support to colleagues working through the difficult weather.
The Birthday Game: Neil
Neil from Belfast turned 52 and worked as a bowls official.
He had officiated for around 25 years, including at two Commonwealth Games and the World Indoor Championships in Norfolk.
Neil explained the different roles of marker, umpire and shot-clock operator.
He wanted music from the 1980s, 1990s or early 2000s.
His first spin was White Town’s Your Woman. Neil rejected it.
The second was Arctic Monkeys’ When the Sun Goes Down. He gambled again.
His compulsory third song was Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now, number one in 1988.
Neil had preferred Tiffany to Debbie Gibson during their supposed late-1980s rivalry and was delighted with the result.
Scott also revealed that Tiffany’s version was itself a cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells song.
Beverley Knight
Beverley Knight joined Scott during an exceptionally busy period involving Sister Act, new music, touring, a Radio 2 series and an imminent Piano Room performance.
She remembered her mother unexpectedly travelling from Wolverhampton to surprise her backstage at a Nottingham show.
Beverley also reflected on the 25th anniversary of her double victory at the MOBO Awards and the fact that songs such as Shoulda Woulda Coulda were now more than two decades old.
Singing from the diaphragm
Scott asked Beverley for help after a vocal coach described his pantomime performance as talk-singing.
Beverley instructed him to place a hand on his stomach and cough to locate the diaphragm.
She explained that projection should come from there rather than from squeezing the neck and throat.
Beverley promised that her Piano Room performance would make the microphone explode and teased listeners to expect the unexpected.
Scott played her new song Not Prepared for You.
