Beyoncé’s birthday
Scott began by reflecting on Beyoncé’s birthday show in Los Angeles.
Diana Ross joined the 60,000-strong crowd to sing Happy Birthday, leaving Beyoncé visibly overwhelmed.
Scott used the moment to introduce the day’s Birthday Game and imagined what it would be like to have millions of Radio 2 listeners waiting for the result.
The mysterious school S
Scott investigated the stylised S that generations of pupils drew in exercise books, on pencil cases and occasionally on school furniture.
A Swedish researcher had spent five years trying to trace its origin.
Possible explanations included Stüssy, Suzuki and heavy-metal logos, but examples predated them all.
The earliest documented version was eventually linked to a geometry exercise published in the 1890s.
Scott enjoyed imagining Victorian schoolchildren carefully drawing the symbol with quills and inkwells.
Hey Duggee and friends
Duggee returned to Wogan House with Choo Choo, Mr Crab, Tino, Hennie and other friends from the programme.
The Squirrels themselves remained at Squirrel Club.
Scott replayed Radio 2’s mash-up of the Stick Song and ATB’s 9 PM (Till I Come) and said it had become a reliable crowd-pleaser.
He was considering adding it to his Radio 2 in the Park DJ set.
New badges
The group previewed new episodes and badges, including:
– the Days of the Week Badge
– the Feelings Badge
– the Recipe Badge
– the Wisdom Badge
– the Choir Badge
The Choir Badge featured the BBC Singers.
Scott said the Feelings Badge was particularly appropriate because he had plenty of feelings of his own.
Surprise calls
Duggee and the others surprised some of the programme’s youngest and most enthusiastic fans by telephone.
One listener on a train accidentally said “Hey Duggee” aloud after recognising the voices through his headphones, confusing the rest of the carriage.
Duggee also personally requested Westlife’s World of Our Own.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after the full Squirrel Club takeover.
