Dame Paula’s performance spreads
Scott replayed Paula’s performance of Rapper’s Delight after it was discussed on Zoe Ball’s programme and praised by colleagues across Wogan House.
Paula had completed the radio edit rather than the full 15-minute recording, but the achievement still involved a considerable number of lyrics.
The Birthday Game: Ryan
Ryan from Liverpool had moved all his work meetings so he could play the Birthday Game.
His girlfriend Kayleigh had told him to book Friday and Monday off and arranged for their dog Vicky to stay with his parents, but refused to reveal the surprise trip.
Ryan liked to remain in control and felt equally excited and apprehensive.
He was a major Beatles and Paul McCartney fan and had McCartney’s Höfner bass tattooed on his arm. His other favourites included Oasis, Fleetwood Mac, Taylor Swift and Take That.
His first spin was George Ezra’s Shotgun, number one in 2018. Ryan liked it but ignored Scott’s advice and gambled.
The second was Irene Cara’s Fame. Ryan again chose to spin, admitting that most of him already wished he had kept George Ezra.
His compulsory final song was Roger Sanchez’s Another Chance, number one in 2001.
Ryan accepted the dance classic and received the birthday balloon.
Jen knows Ice Ice Baby
Jen from Leicester claimed she knew every word of Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby.
She had learned the song as a child by writing its lyrics on balloons with her older sister at Christmas.
Scott had never heard of the tradition and questioned how they avoided bursting the balloons. Jen explained that they used a biro rather than a sharper pen.
Jen began performing the song from memory and continued far enough into the later verses to convince Scott.
He stopped her before the third verse, declared the claim proven and awarded her a damehood alongside Paula.
Jen had delivered the performance while sitting on her lounge windowsill, rather than from the lorry she normally drove.
A new Music Police case
Scott previewed the following day’s Music Police investigation.
Danny had a tune circling his head even though he knew the song’s identity, creating a slightly unusual case for the force.
Listeners were invited to send their suggestions before the Thursday programme.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after declaring Dame Jen and Dame Paula the lyrical heroes of the week.
