An S Club Valentine’s Day
Scott devoted much of the programme to the newly announced S Club 7 reunion.
All seven members — Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jo O’Meara, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole, Rachel Stevens and Tina Barrett — were back together for an 11-date UK tour marking 25 years since their debut.
Listeners recalled growing up with the group’s records and television series, while several said meetings and work would have to wait until the interview had finished.
The band said they were excited to sing the hits together again and understood that tickets would be difficult to secure when the general sale opened.
Bear’s goodbye song
The previous day’s experiment with Bear in the Big Blue House continued.
Jennifer, a dog groomer in Stokesley, said a cockapoo called Barney began howling when Scott played Bear’s sniffing sound.
Other dogs remained indifferent, including a labradoodle called Peggy.
After thousands of messages, Scott also played the programme’s farewell song, which prompted nostalgic reactions from parents whose children were now adults.
The Birthday Game: Tracy
Tracy from Lincolnshire celebrated her 40th birthday in a hotel overlooking Times Square.
She planned to visit the Empire State Building and recreate a Sleepless in Seattle moment, although she had forgotten to bring a teddy bear.
Tracy shared her birthday with Becky Hill, Simon Pegg, Dean Gaffney and footballer Christian Eriksen.
Her first spin was Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, number one in 1966. Tracy called it a classic but chose to continue.
The second was ABBA’s Take a Chance on Me, number one in 1978. Tracy accepted it because both she and her daughter loved ABBA and Mamma Mia!.
Her unused third choice would have been 2 Unlimited’s No Limit.
The children of S Club
Scott asked what the band members’ children thought about their parents’ fame.
Jo said her teenage son had once found S Club embarrassing but had learned that mentioning his mother’s band could impress girls.
Hannah’s four-year-old daughter believed her mother lived inside the television and identified almost any blonde woman on screen as her.
Her two-year-old loved dinosaurs but was too young to understand Hannah’s role in Primeval.
The group also revisited Miami 7, including the famously ambitious scene in which Jo was carried away by an umbrella during a storm.
They joked that the acting and special effects had been overlooked at the BAFTAs because the industry was jealous and not ready for their work.
S Club’s Same Interview
Scott found questions the group had answered in magazine interviews around 2000 and asked them again.
Jon was asked whether romance was necessary on a summer holiday. His modern answer involved beer, ice cream and the sea, while his younger self had said holiday romance was ideal because the couple would never have to see each other again.
Hannah was asked how she always looked gorgeous. She now credited exercise and water, while her old answer said she ignored beauty routines, stayed out late and never had enough sleep — although she also mentioned drinking water.
Rachel was asked whether she would go solo or join another group if she left S Club. She now chose a solo career. Her older answer had only ruled out joining another group, effectively avoiding the question before she later did release solo music.
Paul was asked what he would be doing in five years. He suggested producing music, while his 2000 answer predicted living in the countryside and fishing for trout. He had achieved the countryside part but admitted he had not taken up trout fishing.
Bradley revisited the use of Reach during the Popstars auditions for Hear’Say. His younger self had said the difficult song made S Club look good because contestants struggled to sing it.
The group also corrected a modern misheard lyric. Younger clubbers often sang “reach up for the stars”, although there is no “up” in the line. The missing word was apparently being inserted where the trumpet played.
Tina was asked whether she felt less important because Jo was regarded as the main singer. She said every member had sung and the television series made them equally important. Her younger answer was more pointed: the second album would give everyone a solo song.
Jo was asked where she would travel on a private jet and who she would take. She now wanted to rescue animals and bring them home. In 2000, she chose Mauritius or Bali with her then-boyfriend.
The reunion tour
The band said the show would contain all the major hits and promised to relearn the original choreography.
Paul was challenged to restore his caterpillar dance move before the tour.
Scott thanked the band for reuniting in the Radio 2 studio and later produced an extended hour-long version of the interview for BBC Sounds.
Handover
Scott handed over to Sara Cox after listeners celebrated hearing all seven members together again.
