Tom Gregory’s proud dad
Scott spoke to Nigel, father of singer Tom Gregory, after learning that he listened to the programme.
Nigel was proud that Tom’s new song Forget Somebody was receiving Radio 2 airplay and described himself as his son’s biggest supporter.
Scott then played the song and discovered that Tom was listening too.
Tom sent a message joking that his father had made his Radio 2 debut before he had.
He thanked Nigel for supporting him throughout his career and insisted that his father should be invited whenever Radio 2 eventually interviewed him.
Listeners said everyone needed a dad as supportive as Nigel.
The Birthday Game: Stuart
Stuart turned 61 and was waiting to discover where his partner Sheena would take him for dinner.
He used the call to make it clear that he wanted Indian food.
Stuart shared his birthday with Mary J Blige, Rachel Riley and Jamie Vardy.
His first Birthday Game spin was Michelle McManus’s All This Time, the winner’s single from the second series of Pop Idol. He rejected it.
The second was Iyaz’s Replay, written about a woman the singer met in a shopping centre. Stuart rejected that too.
His compulsory final selection was New Kids on the Block’s Hangin’ Tough.
Scott explained that the group had deliberately tried to create something resembling Queen’s We Will Rock You.
Stuart was satisfied with the result, and Scott and Bobby Pryor tried to remember the accompanying one-arm dance move and the names of all five group members.
The Music Police
Scott reopened the Music Police for songs listeners could partly remember but could not identify.
His friend Damien worked in the music industry but had spent six months trying to solve one particular mystery.
Damien remembered a line that sounded like: “Stop paloumi, stop paloumi, stop, stop, stop,” with “paloumi” compared to halloumi cheese.
Scott was unable to identify it, but thousands of listeners responded almost immediately.
The song was Dr Alban’s It’s My Life. The actual repeated phrase was “It’s my life”, not an instruction to stop an imaginary cheese.
Scott texted Damien with the result and said he was enormously relieved.
Titanic returns
The programme returned to Johnny’s story from the previous day about taking his future partner to see Titanic on a disastrous first date.
Scott noted that the film was being rereleased in cinemas for its 25th anniversary in 4K and 3D.
Handover
OJ Borg followed Scott and described the programme as “a cracker of a show”.
