2 March 2022: Jordan North’s legs gave way as Rowing Home became brutally real

Jordan’s body was beginning to rebel

Scott was without Chris, and almost the entire programme revolved around Jordan North.

The previous day had ended badly. Jordan had climbed out of the boat and his legs had effectively stopped cooperating, leaving him collapsing to the ground after hours of rowing.

The new day offered little relief.

He faced dozens of narrow bridges and repeated manoeuvring which increased the risk of capsizing and made progress much slower.

Jordan’s back, shoulders, hands and feet were all hurting, while the cold and damp had become relentless.

Scott kept returning to the same point: Jordan was not an endurance athlete, he was a radio presenter who had taken on an unusually physical fundraising challenge.

Katie Thistleton reported from the route

Katie Thistleton checked in from beside the canal as Jordan moved between sections.

She described the support around him, the physio work and the effort required simply to get him back into the boat after breaks.

Jordan joined briefly and struggled to name a part of his body which did not hurt.

The running joke was that even his hair might be sore by this point.

Scott also looked ahead to the following day, when Becky Hill was due to become the first in-studio guest on the programme for around two years.

The challenge was to find something Becky could say or sing which might get Jordan through another day.

Jordan’s own history became the quiz

The quiz turned Jordan’s past against him.

Scott and Katie were asked whether increasingly embarrassing old posts had genuinely come from Jordan’s social media.

One involved praising Steps as “the ABBA of my generation”. Another old tweet celebrated getting Sky Go working on his laptop.

The next round returned to I’m A Celebrity, removing key words from memorable Jordan quotes and asking the team to fill in the gaps.

While Jordan was somewhere on the canal trying to keep moving, Radio 1 was keeping morale high by broadcasting evidence of things he had said years earlier.
